Drake’s online Master of Science in Education program is designed to prepare busy, working educators to implement the innovative teaching methods needed to engage learners for academic success. Drake’s master’s in education program will develop leadership abilities both inside and outside of the classroom. Graduates of the Master of Science in Education program are prepared to rise to the level of teacher leader or master teacher, as well as take on roles as literacy coaches, reading specialists, or curriculum developers.

Curriculum

The online Master of Science in Education consists of 32 credit hours and provides educators with valuable instructional strategies needed to engage learners and become leaders in education. Taught by the same distinguished faculty who teach on Drake University’s campus, courses are research-based and emphasize discussion, allowing students to learn from each other, as well. The MSE curriculum emphasizes contemporary methods in pedagogy that can be immediately applied in the classroom. Courses include:

Effective Teaching – Prepares students to align materials, instructions, technology, and assessment to best fit learning targets and student goals, as well as to evaluate teacher behaviors and to teach students about their own learning.

Balanced Assessment for Learning – Explores best practices in student assessment for learning, providing educators with strong models around the creation, use, and communication of effective assessment practices.

Culturally Responsive Teaching – Examines the Cultural Proficiency Framework and philosophies that support it, allowing students to reflect on their own social identities and experiences that affect their perceptions of education and practices within the classroom.

The program also allows teachers to gain additional expertise through an area of specialization or by completing the courses required for an endorsement, such as Reading Specialist or English as a Second Language.
